Remote Structural Infrasound: Case Studies of Real-Time Infrastructure System Monitoring

Infrastructure in the continental United States is often used beyond its design life due to budgetary constraints and logistical hurdles. New structural health monitoring techniques have been developed mitigate increasingly constrained resources available by identifying potential need repair retrofit aging infrastructure from modal signatures. Large structures, such as bridges dams, emit infrasound (acoustic energy below that of human perception) at their natural modes vibration, which can be related capacity; this infrasonic propagate tens kilometers infrastructure. Currently, determination requires intensive hands-on measurements individual elements repeated intervals. Persistent, remote assessment provides a method for standoff behavior structures damage assessment. Case studies demonstrations technology are presented water control systems, transportation riverine systems.
